Modeoheim.
Zack could not have explained to anyone what had driven him back to this abandoned, snow-ridden little town if they asked him, yet here he stood, unnatural blue eyes taking in the bleak, partially ruined little town. When he had decided to go take a walk and check out the area, he had never planned to go anywhere in particular. Heck, he almost hadn't remembered Modeoheim was even here, since no one talked about it anymore. Nothing to talk about. It was a ghost town, only populated by a handful of creatures now, most of which had skittered off when the sound of Zack's boots crunching the snow had made known his approach. Yeah, Modeoheim wasn't worth a thing to anyone anymore...except Zack Fair.
Fortunately, the snow that always seemed to be falling in this part of the world had thickened with the time of year, and as Zack took in a breath and began walking through the dead streets, he couldn't recognize many of the buildings from his last trip here. Yep, he'd been here before....as a SOLDIER, on a mission with Cloud and the Turk, Tseng. It was just another one of those "routine missions"...yeah, SOLDIERS really had a lot of missions actually end up routine. At the time they'd been looking for Genesis, but Zack found someone else entirely. He ran into Angeal. This...this was the place where Angeal died. This was where Angeal had given Zack the Buster Sword. And this was where Shinra had stepped in and swept aside all indications that any rogue SOLDIER had ever been here.
Zack, needless to say, didn't need any indications. He remembered that day all too well. Heck, he'd met Cloud for the first time that day, hadn't he? So the memories of this place weren't all bad, he supposed. Just being back here, though...it was like returning to a past life. Zack stopped at the crossing of what must have been two streets a decade ago, putting his hands on his hips and surveying the few rooftops that still popped up above the snow. He'd known, even before arriving, that there would be nothing to see here. The only thing he earned by coming was the knowing...knowing that no one really gave a damn about Modeoheim anymore, even if one of the greatest men Zack had ever known met his end here. For some reason...Zack felt as if Sephiroth would have passed through here recently. No footsteps, though. Dead end.
As he decided that his walk was over and he should head back to the others, Zack started back towards the village entrance, listening to his footsteps and the scratching of the few creatures around.
- But he was made to stop when a second set of footsteps joined in. Idly listening to them for a moment, Zack swung around to search for the other individual. He saw no one immediately. "Hey!", he called through the howling wind, his voice cutting through easily. "Who goes there?"
